Life in Nakivale Is Not Easy—But It’s Ours By Amina Kalume

Life in Nakivale Is Not Easy—But It’s Ours”

Every morning in Nakivale starts with the sound of footsteps and jerrycans. We wake up early to fetch water, sweep the compound, and prepare porridge if we’re lucky. Some days there’s enough food, some days we stretch one meal across two.

But in between the struggle, there’s life.

Children play with handmade toys. Women braid hair under mango trees. Men gather for evening chats. We laugh. We sing. We survive—together.

Our houses are made of tarpaulin and mud. Our clothes are second-hand. But we still care about how we present ourselves. We still find ways to smile. To hope. To move forward.

This lifestyle is not what we chose. But it is what we live. And through it all, we hold onto one another—and to the belief that tomorrow might be better.
